Campfire Field Notes. Client Retreats
How Europe's leading IT service management company gathered 460 people from 22 nationalities on the Costa Blanca, and turned three days of relentless operational complexity into something that felt, by the final evening, like a celebration.
Matrix42 does not do anything quietly, and their retreat reflected that. The Stuttgart-headquartered company has spent years building the case that European organisations deserve European software: IT and enterprise service management tools designed from the ground up around the continent's regulatory reality, data sovereignty requirements, and local ways of working.
With offices in Germany, Finland, Poland, Spain, and Sweden, and an AI-powered platform that optimises business operations in ways clients often don't anticipate until they're already happening, Matrix42 has grown into the defining name in its category on this side of the Atlantic.
So when it came time to bring the organisation together in May 2026, the brief was never going to be modest. Four hundred and sixty people. Twenty-two nationalities. Three days on the Costa Blanca to do what no amount of enterprise software can do on its own: put people in a room, face to face, and remind them why the work matters.

The Setting
The Four Points Costa Blanca Resort occupies a section of the Spanish coastline unlike anywhere else in Europe. Sun-bleached and expansive, the property combines a contemporary resort and villa estate with private parkland and a sprawling network of meeting pavilions, the sort of venue that rewards orientation on arrival and punishes anyone who forgets a map. For an event of this scale, the geography was both an asset and a logistical puzzle: large enough to absorb 460 people without crowding, complex enough that movement between spaces required constant coordination. The Campfire team of four covered it on foot. Twenty-eight thousand five hundred steps a day.
The programme was built around strategic alignment. Nine workshops ran across the three days, designed to draw together teams from across Matrix42's European and international operations behind a shared direction for the year ahead. The agenda was dense by design: this was a company in motion, accelerating its AI capabilities and deepening its continental footprint, and the sessions reflected that ambition. But the event was not only a series of rooms with slides. A treasure hunt wound through the resort's theme park, pulling participants out of their conference chairs and into something that demanded different instincts: lateral thinking, collaboration across teams, movement through an unfamiliar space. In a packed schedule, it became one of the moments people talked about afterwards.
The final evening gathered everyone together, and the Campfire team worked with considerable intensity to get everything exactly right. A Costa Blanca night warm enough to make the effort feel effortless, even if the hours behind it told a different story. Matrix42 arrived in Spain as 460 individuals from 22 countries. They left as something more coherent. That, more than any single session or evening, is what three days on the Costa Blanca was always for.
